Creating a freebie lead magnet your audience can't ignore

Because "sign up for my newsletter" isn't cutting it anymore...

You want to grow your email list. Because you’ve heard (correctly) your mailing list is where the money is.

And because only relying on social media for your leads is like building your business on quicksand.

👀 So here it is:

You know you need a lead magnet… You just don’t know what on earth it should be. Or how to make one. Or how to actually get people to sign up for it once it’s live.

Sound familiar? Cool, you’re in the right place. Let’s walk through how to create a juicy, can’t-scroll-past lead magnet to grow your mailing list on autopilot.

First up, what is a lead magnet?!

A lead magnet is a freebie you offer in exchange for an email address. Simples.

But it’s not just any freebie. We’re not talking about some dusty old checklist or 12-page ebook no one asked for.

We’re talking about something your dream client sees & goes “Omg, I need that.” Something that's:

  • Bite-sized

  • Solves a real problem

  • Easy to consume

  • Makes your reader think, “If this is free, imagine what their paid stuff is like…”

Step #1: Nail your idea (AKA solve a tiny but mighty problem)

Here’s where most small biz owners overthink it. They try to solve everything in one freebie & end up creating something that solves nothing.

Instead, ask yourself:

  • What’s a small but frustrating problem your audience faces regularly?

  • What’s a quick win you could help them get today?

  • What question do you get asked all the time?

Here are some industry-specific lead magnet examples:

  • A social media manager could create: “30 Reels kooks that actually work”

  • A wellness coach might offer: “The 5-day bloat-free meal plan”

  • A copywriter might go with: “Plug-and-play homepage copy template”

It doesn’t need to be groundbreaking. It needs to be useful & ultra-specific.

Still stuck?

This is your permission slip to repurpose something you’ve already created:

  • A snippet from one of your paid offers (think: teaser)

  • A high-ranking & valuable blog post turned into an actionable checklist

  • A juicy client resource you already know people LOVE

Step #2: Make it look good without overcomplicating it

Your lead magnet doesn’t need to look like Apple designed it. But it should feel polished & professional enough that someone wants to download it.

You can DIY a good-looking PDF in Canva in under an hour. Promise.

Quick tips:

  • Keep your fonts & colours on-brand (we want it to look like YOU)

  • Use clear, friendly headings (talk to me like a human)

  • Include your logo or a lil photo so they remember who helped them

Bonus points: Add a “what to do next” section at the end (aka soft pitch your offer or invite them to a call). Get them thinking about how you can help them further.

Step #3: Actually get people to download it (this is where the magic hapens)

Creating your freebie is only half the battle. The other half? Promotion.

Because if no one sees it… It won’t grow your list.

Here's how to get it in front of eyeballs:

  1. Create a landing page: You need a simple, no-distraction page where someone can pop in their email. Most email marketing tools (Flodesk is my fave - aff link) have this built-in.

  2. Add it to your social channel bios: Link it in your Instagram bio with a clear CTA like: “Grab my free Reels hook guide 👇”

  3. Talk about it all the time: Not just once when it launches. Repetition is your BFF here, for example:

    1. Build a mini launch plan

    2. Create 3–5 Instagram posts you can repurpose time & time again

    3. Talk about it on Stories

    4. Add it to your email signature

    5. Hyperlink it in your blog posts

One more thing…

Your lead magnet isn’t just a list builder. It’s the first taste of what it’s like to work with you. So make it count.

Solve a real problem. Show up as you. And watch your email list grow with the right people who are genuinely excited to hear from you.
